american flagWhile celebrating this Fourth of July holiday, remember that respect for our Nation’s flag is important. Here are a few tips for keeping patriotism the #1 goal this July 4 –

Flying our Colors:

~ Our flag is typically waved from sunrise to sundown – however, 24 hours during special holidays is encouraged when the flag is illuminated.

~ Raise the flag in only good weather conditions, unless you have an all-weather flag.

~ Keep in mind, flying our stars and stripes upside down is a signal for distress.

~ The American flag should always fly the highest and largest compared to other flags surrounding it.

Flag TLC:

~ Always keep the flag clean and in good condition – repairing when necessary.

~ When flag is damaged and no longer fit for flying, burn it in a dignified manner.

~ Keep the traditional folding steps in mind when storing the flag. Each fold represents a characteristic of our country.

~ Never let the flag touch the ground when lowering it.

Keeping Respect for our Flag:

~ The flag should never be used for decoration (I.e. desk covering, drapery, clothing wrap).

~ Never embroider or stitch or add to the flag.

~ The flag should be flown at half staff during: Memorial Day until noon and then full staff from noon to sunset, and during the mourning of government leaders or upon presidential or gubernatorial orders.
