Adapt. The beautiful thing about dining at a table with attendees of all different backgrounds, ethnicities, and experiences is the expansion of your own understanding. With that comes the importance of knowing how to best respect different cultures represented. When dining at an international table, adapt to the host. For example, Europeans traditionally eat continental style. If the host of your table is dining continental, adapt to continental.
Conversations. Table conversations are great channels for building bountiful relationships that extend beyond the meal. When you approach the table, politely introduce yourself before taking your seat. Aim to maintain a conversation that everyone can participate in. Avoid discussing taboo topics such as politics or religion. Your hometown sports team, a recent vacation, or favorite foods are fun table topics that keep the conversation flowing.
“B.M.W.” At first glance, a table setting can be intimidating. Knowing which fork or which drink belongs to you helps avoid any awkward mistakes. “B.M.W.” stands for bread – meal – water. When seated at the table your bread plate is on the left, entrée in the middle, and beverage on the right.
Electronics. You are at the table to build a relationship with the other guests. Your phone does not have a seat at that table. Do not glance through your emails, respond to messages or Instagram a photo of your salad (no matter how good it looks). If you are expecting an important call, let your table know that you may need to step away for a moment.
