8 Secrets to a Successful Home Office
I don’t think I’ve ever come across a home office worker who isn’t guilty of putting things off. This may partly be due to spending time alone or avoiding certain tasks, whereas in a busy office it’s easier to put it out of your mind and concentrate on other things. Or it might be the tendency of some who work from home to give themselves grief over what they’re achieving, not having anyone to compare themselves or commiserate with.
Well, here are eight tips that will help keep you on the fast track to success.
- Remember your goals. Why did you decide to set up a home office? Was it to save time, money, or allow for a flexible schedule? Once you determine why you have chosen to set up a home office, then you will be able to structure your time most effectively.
- Establish a plan. Whether you are starting up a new business or working for an established organization, be sure to create a business plan before getting started. On Sunday evening, spend about 30 minutes outlining what needs to be accomplished in the coming week. Then, each morning over coffee or breakfast, spend about 15 minutes outlining your plans for the day, keeping in mind you may have to be flexible, as unexpected events or issues may arise that you will need to take care of.
- Focus on efficiency. Your home office will work most efficiently if you keep it separate from home life. A separate room or a clearly defined work space works best for productivity and helps to avoid chaos.
- Lay down the law. One of the hardest aspects of working from home is convincing others that you are not socially available during your working hours. Sit down with family and friends and explain your work schedule so they know not to disturb you during these hours.
- Network. Working from home can be isolating. It is important to stay in contact with people by phone, Internet, and in person. Set aside some time each week to talk and meet with colleagues or clients. Even an online business needs a personality, so keep in touch with the outside world.
- Be professional. Even though working from home lends to a casual atmosphere, in business you want to always appear professional. Make sure your equipment is up-to-date, avoid background noise when on the phone or teleconferencing, and dress professionally when meeting with clients and colleagues.
- Enjoy the ride. The best part of working from home is being your own boss and having the power to bend your own rules when the spirit moves you. If you want to take in an afternoon ballgame or go to your child’s piano recital, you have the authority to do so.
- Believe in yourself. Be sure to keep a positive and fresh outlook on your level of achievement. Take the time to schedule classes or seminars so you can continue to grow more successful in your field. Be aggressive, competitive and stay sharp.

Patricia, great suggestions. I like how you said to think about why we went into business for ourselves. Lately, I have found myself rushing. Rushing to finish e-mail or rushing to finish a project so that I can move on to the next thing in my “to do list.” With so many things to do as a business owner, it’s easy to get caught up in thinking we can do more in a day. Great information. If you were to expand it to a 9th secret, I’d suggest setting a boundary for work and home life. As someone who has worked in a home office environment for over 15 years, I can say that it’s very easy for work to encroach in to home life unless you become very disciplined about preventing it.
