7 Motorcycle Safety Awareness Tips
Beautiful weather, higher gas prices, special events, and national holidays are just a few of the reasons we see more motorcycles out on the roads these days. Although we should be conscious of motorcyclists year round, the month of May is dedicated to Motorcycle Safety Awareness. Whether riding on a motorcycle or driving in a vehicle, it is important to always be cognizant of your surroundings and make wise decisions to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
Following are some tips to keep in mind for motorcycle safety:
- Avoid Distractions – Stay focused on your driving and do not allow things such as cell phones and other passengers distract you.
- Keep a Safe Distance – Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and can be harder to see. By keeping a safe distance from them and allowing extra space, they will be able to move about safely in traffic without feeling crowded and threatened by the larger vehicles around them.
- Always Use Turn Signals – Be sure to use turn signals so everyone on the road knows your intentions.
- Do Not Drink and Drive or Ride – Nearly half of all motorcycle accidents are caused by drinking. Generally, motorcycles do not get into fender-benders, so do not operate a motor vehicle if impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Acquire Quality Training and Licensing – If interested in operating a motorcycle, it is most important to be properly trained in motorcycle safety and to be licensed by the DMV.
- Wear Proper Gear – Always wear a motorcycle helmet that meets the Department of Transportation’s standards, as well as other protective gear. Ideally, anyone on a motorcycle should not have any skin visible.
- Obey Traffic Laws and Know Your Abilities – By being properly trained and licensed, you will know the laws and that they are for your own safety and for the safety of others. But also be aware of your limitations. It takes time and practice to become proficient at driving a motor vehicle, so don’t overdo it.
