From the dining room to the digital landscape, introductions are a necessary component to building professional relationships. A strong introduction is truly the shortcut to a lasting first impression for a fruitful relationship.
Here are my top tips for navigating introductions across multiple mediums:
Email. Introductions via email are a common practice in the business world especially while growing your network. Respond by thanking the individual that coordinated the introduction and reiterate your intention. If you’re looking for a new role, seeking a project collaboration, or wanting to understand the industry communicate with a clear purpose.
In Person. Body language is a greatest indicator to your presence in a conversation. Stand “Toes-Tummy-Heart” with your toes, tummy, and heart directed to the person you’re speaking with. During an introduction, make it easier for that individual to remember your first name by repeating it twice. For example, “I’m Patricia, Patricia Rossi.”
Text. Introductions via text are common amongst casual or personal relationships. This could be anyone from a friend of a friend to the babysitter your neighbor recommended. Kindly thank the introducer and message the contact individually.
Social Media. It is common for colleagues to tag your account in the comments of someone’s post with a short blurb to ensure you see the post and connect with them. Respond to the comment letting the person who posted know that you are sending them a message. Send a short voice or video message to personalize the connection with a brief introduction and call to action.
