As technology changes and advances daily, so to things in the business world, which is why career advice that you may have received years ago is no longer of good use today.
The following are some career tips that may not be vital anymore and how they’ve changed over the years –
1~ Don’t Show Weakness. In years past, asking for help at work was a sign of weakness that shouldn’t be shown. Individuals were advised to struggle until they figured things out on their own. Today, the best advice to share with colleagues is to be honest with others, and ask for help, if needed. Doing this saves time and is looked at as an opportunity for growth and learning – not failure.
2~ Don’t Get Personal. Years ago it was a rule of thumb to keep your personal life private at the workplace, but with so many social media sites available now, many co-workers are now bonded closer in one another’s social lives. When used correctly, these sites can help break the ice and build relationships. Just remember to keep your online posts clean and never complain about work-related issues. Also use small talk in the office, as this helps bond relationships, finding out things that you have in common. People that get along always work better together, bringing harmony to the office.
3~ Keep Work at Work. It was always frowned upon to do any work-reelated tasks after hours, as this was supposed to primarily be family time. Because emails can be quickly read on our phones today, it’s now considered okay to spend a few minutes each evening, checking what you may have lined up for the following day. This can help get rid of some of the next morning’s stress, making you feel better prepared for the day.
4~ Never Say No. The age old advice was to always say “yes”, when asked to take on any task at the office, even if that meant you would be over burdened. Today the best thing that you can do is to explain to your boss that you have too much on your plate and are unable to add any additional tasks at the moment. Ask for help in prioritizing things so that you can take on new projects soon. Always explain what you are working on so that your boss understands and doesn’t think that you’re just being lazy.
5~ Never Disagree With the Boss. We’ve all been told to never argue or disagree with our boss, but instead to just let things go and agree with their point of view. While it still remains true that you should never intentionally put down your boss’ ideas and thoughts, you can respectfully show your different ideas. If you feel that your objective would improve the outcome, politely speak up in a respectful and constructive manner.
6~ Keep the Same Job. Years ago the advice on hand was to stay at the same job for years to gain experience before looking for a different position. It today’s workplace, the average person will have several different jobs before the age of 30. Job hopping is not thought of as a way to build skills and utilize opportunities. It can also mean switching positions with the same company, if you find a place that will fit your skills better. While you shouldn’t move jobs monthly, to keep from boredom, if something arises that is more aligned with your career goals, seek the opportunity.
Just like everything in life, not all career advice is true for every person. When it comes to your job, it’s important to think about what tips and advice will truly help you – and seeking it.
