Beyond the sparkling decorations and delicious meals, holiday gatherings are mostly about the people.
For most people, small talk comes naturally, and is thought of as a sacred time spent with others. But for some, trying to mingle with colleagues or family members from out-of-town, is not an easy task.
However, with a few suggestions, and a little effort, you can truly enjoy yourself this season, while widening your social circle.
1~ Prepare. Think of a list of conversation starters before attending the gathering. A great discussion can begin by asking others about their favorite holiday tradition. Other ideas include talking about gift shopping, movies or travel. Keep the topics light, and always be sure to listen intently. Having ideas ready will help to avoid awkward silence.
2~ Mingle Around. Holiday parties are meant for socializing, so remember to spread yourself around to different guests. Avoid the temptation to sit and talk only with your close friends. Try to engage conversation with those that look unfamiliar with others – and introduce them to friends. Also remember to turn your phone on silent, as receiving personal calls while at a party can make you appear rude to the host and other guests.
3~ Ask Names. If you see a familiar face but can’t seem to remember their name, don’t let that stop you from sparking up a conversation. Simply ask the person to remind you again of their name and be sure to use it later while you are talking.
4~ Be Positive. Try to keep all conversations fun and upbeat. Avoid controversial topics, like politics, and try not to talk about pending work projects while at an office gathering. Remember that most people go to parties to relax and enjoy themselves, so keeping conversation topics light will make the evening more enjoyable for everyone.
5~ Leave at the Perfect Time. Never linger too long at social gatherings, causing awkward moments for the host. When you see other guests begin to exit the event, start thanking the host and saying your goodbyes to other guests too – heading for the door.
By preparing ahead of time, keeping a warm and welcoming smile on your face and listening intently – you can not only be a great guest at all holiday gatherings this season, but can also make the events memorable for others too.
