With the election close at hand and the two presidential candidates being so controversial, it seems the subject of politics is one of the top conversation topics at the moment.
Because one of the golden rules has always been to not bring up the subjects of money, health, religion or politics with others – it is hard to know how to handle politics when the subject comes up at work, or even when gathering with family or friends. In today’s world, politics is discussed in all settings, so it’s good to be prepared.
Here are a few tips to follow if you find yourself surrounded by people talking about the current political issues – to help ensure that you don’t accidentally cross boundaries and the respect of others –
1~ Know the Facts. If the subject of politics arises, be sure to at least know the facts. Don’t be overbearing and opinionated, but knowing current topics and facts will at least let you know what is going on. Being well informed is always best.
2~ Listen. Don’t bring up the subject of politics first, but if you find yourself in the middle of a political discussion, never interrupt. Try to listen intently, even if you don’t agree, and allow others time to state their feelings and views.
3~ Ask Questions. Even if you disagree with the opinions of others, show your respect to them and ask questions, listening to every point of view. You might even learn something new.
4~ Keep Calm and Quiet. Politics is something that make many people angry, feeling very strongly about issues. Don’t allow yourself to get worked up with the discussion, and never try to sway someone’s opinion.
5~ Have a Different Subject Ready. If you find yourself at work, or sitting with a group of friends at a party, and the discussion of politics seems to be betting loud and out of hand, be sure to have a back-up subject in mind to bring up. Try changing the talk into a happier trending topic that will change the group’s mood quickly.
6~ Don’t Bring Up the Subject. Just because politics happens to be the main subject on your mind lately, don’t assume that others want to also discuss it. Many people want to gather socially to relax and have no desire to bring up political issues. Don’t be the first person to talk about the subject in front of others.
7~ Keep It Clean. Use good judgment and keep all of your interactions clean. This will help you to remain respected by your friends and the evening’s host will thank you for helping the event run smoothly.
Remember that you must face your friends, family and colleagues again, and want to keep a good relationship with all of them. Because of this it is a good idea to control yourself during this time when the country seems so divided over politics and the antics of the current candidates.
Keeping your cool and personal opinions quiet, can be the best thing to do to help keep you respected among your family and peers.
