airport-2With so many people traveling for both business and pleasure, airports have become busier than ever. This has created longer lines at check-ins and security points, making waiting times sometimes both long and unpredictable.

Although nothing can totally change your airport time, here are a few ways to help you to better navigate more quickly through the airport check-in points, making your travel a more pleasant experience.

~ Before You Leave. A few days prior to your travels, take some time to visit the airline’s website and type in the flight number. This action will give you the terminal number, which will make navigating through the airport much easier. It’s also a good idea to download a map of the airport beforehand so that you know exactly how to reach your terminal.

~ Mobile Apps. One mobile app called MYTSA is a treasure trove full of airport security information and can help offer tips and suggestions on how to make check-ins easier.

~ Packing. Remember that all liquids packed can only be 3.4 ounces, and must be placed in 1-quart size clear zip lock bags. Be sure to pack these bags in an easy access area so that they can be quickly removed during security check points. Only one carry on bag is allowed per person. If you are traveling for business and intend on bringing your laptop or other electronic device, be sure to place it in a computer bag that can be opened and checked quickly by security personnel.

~ Dress Accordingly. Even if you want to dress up for your trip, remember that passing through airport security requires the removal of shoes and belts. This is the time to wear items that can be removed quickly and easily, helping you to pass through check points faster. The best idea is to wear comfortable, slip on shoes and leave the chunky jewelry for a different occasion.

~ Keep important Items Accessible. Travel documents – including boarding passes, passports and photo IDs should be kept in an easily obtainable location for quick access at check points. This will help you move swiftly though lines, not requiring you to dump out everything in your bag in search of one item.

~ Be Patient. Even if you have everything packed accordingly and think you are completely ready for a speedy departure, always remember that airport lines and wait times are unpredictable, especially during high travel times of the year. Remember that everyone is also wanting to hurry though the line and that the airport staff is trying to move everyone as efficiently as possible. This is not the time to be grumpy. Instead be sure to smile and thank the staff for everything that they are doing. It will not only make them happier to help you, but will give you a better perspective during your travels.

With some proper planning ahead of time and a bit of patience, your airport hours don’t have to be dreaded. Instead leave several hours in advance, have yourself properly prepared and you might possibly be able to enjoy a cup of coffee or a snack at your terminal before your plan departs – giving you a few minutes of relaxation instead of feeling rushed and full of frustration this trip.
