Don’t you just hate it when you stop at the grocery store with the intention of getting in and out with a gallon of milk, only to get stuck behind someone who has far too many items to be using the express lane? Maybe you’re that person who causes others to tap their foot and sigh. Be respectful to your cashier and other customers by following these shopping etiquette tips:
Respect Lanes About to Close: Before entering a cash out lane, make sure the cashier’s light is still on, and that there’s not a sign placed at the end of the conveyer belt indicating the line’s closure. The employees working the cash registers often have strict schedules to follow about when they can take their breaks and when their shift ends. You can really help them out, and prevent other rule-abiding customers from becoming annoyed, by searching for another available lane if one is closing.
Stay Alert: Once in the checkout line, it’s both respectful and helpful to put your cell phone away. If you’re paying attention, you’re more likely to hear an invitation from an available cashier, or catch an error as your items are being rung up. You also want to be able to answer any questions the cashier might have.
Respect Item Limits: Don’t use the express lanes if you have more than the specified maximum number of items. An “item” refers to each individual product, not a type of product. Six yogurts equals six items.
Have Your Payment Ready: If there are others waiting to cash out behind you, it’s courteous to already have your cash, coupons, credit cards and rewards cards in hand, speeding up the checkout process for everyone.
Be Kind: A seemingly over-priced item or slow-moving cashier is no reason to lose your temper. Address any questions or comments with your cashier respectfully. If you still have an issue, politely exit the line and speak with a manager.
