Anyone who’s worked in a group, whether it be for a class project or work project, knows that moments of friction can occur. Maybe one person’s work isn’t up to par and the rest of the team is constantly making up for it, or perhaps someone accidentally offended someone else. These types of problems can occur amongst coworkers semi-frequently, but they can be handled quickly and tactfully by following these steps.
Keep the Conflict Confidential: Nobody wants to hear about how they’ve butchered an assignment from someone who isn’t even involved in the project. Unfortunately, gossip can make its way around cubicles as quickly as it made its way around lockers back in high school. Don’t make a habit out of expressing your grievances to your other team members and coworkers.
Address the Conflict: Your coworker can’t correct a behavior or action if they are unaware of it. Respectfully bring up the problem. Practice good communication by setting aside ample time for a discussion, speaking in a calm voice, and listening without interruption when it’s the other’s turn to speak.
Be Solution-Oriented: You could go back and forth with the blame game all day, but it won’t do anyone any good. Once you and your coworker have a clear understanding of the problem, work together to create a two-part solution in which each of you are responsible for doing something to prevent the problem from happening again.
Move Forward: A solution has been found! A problem has been fixed! Don’t hold your coworkers or yourself back by repeatedly bringing up the problem or giving your coworker the cold shoulder just because you’re still a little mad. Once things have been settled, it’s in everyone’s best interest to forgive, forget, and move on.
