Top Three Social Media Etiquette Tips
Manners matter in both your personal life and matters of business – this includes social media. When using web-based communication such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In, keep in mind you want to maintain a polite and professional reputation.
Following are three things to focus on when using social media services:
- Give More Than You Receive – Remember the old adage, “It is better to give than to receive”? Well, that is the attitude you should keep when joining the social media scene. If you want people to notice you, then you should notice them first and frequently. Focus your efforts on building quality relationships. You can’t just jump in and expect to be a top user; you must first earn the respect of other social media users.
- Be Clear and Concise – Be sure to offer information that adds value. People like to read short posts that convey a clear message. You want to keep the attention of your audience, so don’t use too much verbiage. Images, varying fonts, and different colors can be used to draw attention and highlight important points.
- Choose Wisely – Be sure you do not post confidential, personal, or important messages via a public medium. Consider your message carefully, as to whether or not it is meant for all to see. Be considerate. If your message is personal, send a private message, pick up the phone and call, or schedule a face to face meeting. Never post something that you wouldn’t want said about you, or that you wouldn’t share in person.
When used properly, social media allows people to reconnect with their past, keep in touch with family and friends, make new friends, promote business, make new business contacts, network, etc. The list goes on and on. If you mind your social media manners by respecting one another, listening to others, and remain accountable for your actions, then you can anticipate social media success.
Wising you much success and happiness!
