The holiday season is upon us, and with it brings many opportunities to gather together in celebration with others. Whether your plans this season include hosting a gathering with family, or simply attending an event with colleagues, it’s a good idea to remember your manners along the way.

To ensure that you stay in the good graces of others, the following are some tips to follow this season –

AS A GUEST

1~ Be Prompt. It is very important to arrive on time, when invited to a gathering – especially a business party. These functions normally have scheduled availability times. Be sure to be punctual so that you are present for important networking time.

2~ Mingle. Make a point to introduce yourself to others at the party. Know that the host will probably be busy, so don’t rely on them to take you around to those individuals that you don’t know. A friendly smile and introduction, followed by light conversation, can go a long way during gatherings where you may not know very many people.

3~ Lend a Hand. Always offer a helping hand to the party host, even if they say that it’s not necessary.

4~ Try Things. Even if you have already had dinner before arrival, be sure to sample some of the snacks and drinks offered at the party. Remember that the host spent a lot of time preparing things for the gathering, so show your appreciation by sampling the food offered.

5~ Don’t Bring Uninvited Guests. Be sure to ask the host’s permission before arriving to the party with an uninvited guest, as this move reflects poorly on you. This can even include your spouse, or close family member that was not included on the invitation.

6~ Bring a Gift. Professional gatherings don’t always require a gift, but bringing a small token for the party’s host is a wonderful idea for personal events. Some gift ideas are candy, flowers or a bottle of wine. The gift does not have to be big, but just enough to show the host that you appreciate the invitation to celebrate with them.

7~ Thank Them. To make a lasting impression, send the host a quick, hand-written, thank you note letting them know how much you enjoyed their gathering. Make sure to mail the note promptly. This small gesture will have a large impact.

FOR HOSTS-

1~ Be Stocked. Make all of your guests feel welcome by offering a large variety of snacks at your gathering. Also remember to have both hot and cold beverages, and some non-alcoholic drinks, ensuring that all guests will have their needs met.

2~ Greet Everyone. Even if you are busy, make sure that you take the time to personally greet every guest at the door upon their arrival. This will make them feel truly welcome.

3~ Make Introductions. Just because you know all of the people at your gathering does not mean that your guests are all acquaintances. Be sure to mingle with everyone and remember to introduce guests to one another, ensuring that everyone has a memorable evening.

Remembering your manners this holiday season during gatherings, reflects on you as a person. Following these easy tips can help you shine this year at all events, both as a guest and a host.
