Although school is about to start and all of the local stores are already stocking their shelves with fall and winter items, summer is not quite over yet.

The good news is that there is still time to enjoy the warm weather before the hectic fall lifestyle starts again, and many of the activities offered this time of year come with end-of-season discounts and special offers.

You can make August a month to remember for you and your family with one or more of these fun activities –

1~ Swim. Whether it’s a public beach or a local pool or water park, there’s nothing more refreshing than swimming on a hot day. Pack a picnic lunch and either head out alone, invite friends, or take the family on a day adventure to enjoy the water together.

2~ Free Outdoor Movies. In most communities, you can find free, family-friendly movies, shown outside at dusk. Check your local town or city’s events calendar for the schedule and location. These events make a great night for the entire family and only require you to bring snacks and a blanket to sit on.

3~ Host a Potluck. Summer is the best time to catch up with friends before the busy school season begins. One way to do this is to host a potluck dinner, where you ask each guest to bring part of the meal. This way you have everything for a fantastic meal and no one has to spend hours over a hot stove preparing things – but instead can relax outside, enjoying each other’s company.

4~ Visit a Local Market. August marks the time of  year when most gardens are overflowing with fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of this opportunity and visit a local farmer’s market. Purchasing produce at one of these places means that you are eating healthy, locally grown foods, while supporting local people and businesses.

5~ Steps Challenge. Start a challenge with colleagues or friends and family to walk a certain amount of steps every day. Give incentives and fun prizes for the weekly winners, so that competition will ensue. This gives you a great excuse to get outside and explore, while the weather is still nice – plus it promotes good health with exercise.

6~ Free Admission Days. Usually the end of summer marks the month when local attractions, like museums and amusement parks, offer discount and free admission days. Try searching online to find out the reduced rates and hours before you visit.

7~ Home Repairs. Before the fall weather begins, is the best time to walk around your house to ensure that nothing needs to be repaired before the cold season hits. Fences can be painted and gutters cleaned out on a nice warm day.

8~ Water Balloon Fight. Visit a dollar store and fill several large tubs with water balloons. This is a great way for the family to cool off, and is fun for all ages. Invite the neighbors to join in for additional fun and laughs.

9~ Visit a Farm. Many farms offer berry and sweet corn picking during August and sometimes also offer hay rides and visits with animals on the farm. These trips are a great way to get outside and have all family members assist with picking berries that everyone can enjoy over ice cream later.

10~ Kids Eat Free. If it’s a really warm night and you don’t feel like cooking, many restaurants offer ‘Kids Eat Free’ night during the week – or have special discounts. Deals like this help everyone enjoy a night together before school starts, without spending a fortune.

Don’t let the calendar, or the stores, panic you into thinking that summer is over yet. You still have some time to get out and enjoy some activities before the days begin to cool down and become shorter.
