Whether you’re launching your career or making an industry pivot, networking is imperative for upkeeping your professional relationships. Everyone from young professionals to seasoned pros occasionally get a case of the networking nerves.
These are my top tips for conquering your next networking event:
Introductions. When a new member approaches your group or your table at a networking event, welcome them in by making the introduction. Stand “toes-tummy-heart” with your toes, tummy, and heart pointed in the direction of the individual. Introduce yourself in the format of, “I’m Patricia, Patricia Rossi.”
Prepared stories. Before stepping foot in the venue, have 3-4 prepared stories or phrases for clear communication. When you are intentional with your preparation you can communicate who you are, what you do, and where you’re going with confidence.
Facilitated events. If networking is still uncomfortable for you, scout out local facilitated events in your community. Local organizations such as BNI or the Chamber of Commerce host programming with a strict flow of facilitated activities. Search your local area on Eventbrite for speed networking, Mentorship Monday, or conference related activities.
Follow Up. The relationship is made in the follow up. Send out your follow up emails the morning after your event with a clear call to action. Are you wanting to volunteer at their event? Schedule a phone call? Be clear in your follow up to set expectations and intentions for the relationship.
From your couch. Network from your couch in your pajamas by interacting with relevant industry hashtags and accounts. Social media is a powerful tool to connect with and build relationships with people all over the world.
