Dining out with colleagues is something that most business professionals enjoy and look forward to. It can be a time to discuss business or an invitation to relax and get to know other associates on a personal level.

Unfortunately this activity can also cause awkward moments when it’s time to pay the bill. To some, paying the tab is no big deal, when to others it can cause a dilemma that creates a rift in a business relationship.

Here are a few rules to follow to ensure that you don’t appear cheap when dining out for business –

1~ If there is an offer, Accept it. If someone at the table quickly offers to pay the bill, don’t make them feel awkward by declining – graciously accept their offer. Be sure to thank them and remember that you should offer to pay next time.

2~ Bosses Should Pay. If you are dining out with your boss, they should always pay the bill. Even if everyone at the table is not from the same company, the senior level people should take it upon themselves to offer to pick up the tab.

3~ The Vendor Pays. If you are a vendor taking a customer out – you are in charge of the tab. The vendor should always offer to pay because their company is on the receiving end of the business transaction. The only exception to this is when some companies have specific rules against vendors buying. In that case, just offer to fit your own bill for the meal.

4~ Avoid Silence and Offer to Pay. If the waiter sets the check on the table and no one offers to pay, avoid awkward silence and offer to take the check. Don’t try to split everything up, making you look cheap. Just pay for the entire tab, knowing that your colleagues will appreciate the gesture and hopefully take their turn at the next meal out.

5~ Always Pay When You’ve Invited. If you have invited a co-worker out to lunch because they are having a difficult time or just because you enjoy their company – always pay the check without hesitation. If you did the inviting, then paying is your sole responsibility – no excuses.

Following these etiquette tips when dining out with colleagues or clients can help avoid uncomfortable moments and also keep you thought of as a respected and professional associate at the office.
